Finding a job and being successful can be difficult when you have a disability. To help make this easier, Social Security has created the SSI Ticket to Work program which provides free employment services that will help you decide if you should work, prepare for work, find a job, and be successful while working. This program is offered to those that are between 18 and 64 years of age and receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Here are the four primary services that the program offers.
Employment Networks (EN)
The Ticket to Work program offers a variety of employment networks. These networks come from both public and private organizations and provide career counseling and assistance with job placement. The public organizations are a part of a state’s public workforce system, tasked with assisting those that need help finding a job due to a disability.
Vocational Rehabilitation (VR)
For those that need some more significant help, vocational rehabilitation can provide training, education, and rehabilitation regarding how to find and keep a job. This is in addition to providing the same services as employment networks, offering career counseling and job placement assistance. Additionally, vocational rehabilitation services will provide information on how working will affect your Social Security benefits.
Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA)
The WIPA program is made up of organizations that have been specifically authorized by Social Security to provide free counseling to beneficiaries. The purpose of this program is to help beneficiaries make informed decisions about whether or not they should work and where they should work. This will help in the long term as they will be able to get placed in jobs where they will have a greater chance of success.
Protection and Advocacy for Beneficiaries of Social Security (PABSS)
Those that suffer from disabilities have certain rights guaranteed to them by law. Additionally, there are certain conditions that must be met in order to maintain employment. Understanding these rights and conditions are crucial when entering the workforce under the circumstances of suffering from a disability. This program will help beneficiaries understand what their rights are when entering the workforce as well as the conditions of their employment.
The SSI Ticket to Work program is designed the educate Social Security beneficiaries on whether or not they should enter the workforce and then assist them on the entering. These four programs will help eligible persons through that process.
